I started teaching in 2006 and have taught in both the charter and public school systems of School District 27J. A wide range of students have graced my classroom with a vast range of skill sets, cognitive levels, and varied English language proficiencies. It’s my belief that all students can be empowered through the art making process. These students are empowered to find their own artistic voices and are allowed to express themselves in a safe environment and find success in their ability to express their artistic voice. All of my students are able to demonstrate growth in their abilities to express their personal beliefs and values, develop craft, envision new ideas, understand the art community, observe the world around them through an artistic lens, engage and persist through challenging tasks, stretch and explore with new ideas and media while reflecting through the entire process. Student learning in my classroom branches across multiple disciplines through self-directed projects while meeting the needs of each individual student. Each learning experience incorporates knowledge gained from their core classes, in-class demonstrations, and their personal life experiences while creating meaningful and purposeful art. It’s my goal that all students select tasks that are challenging to them, while applying their learning to these art pieces. The ability to self-direct their learning, manage their time, work individually and collaboratively are all essential life skills that students will need when they enter the workforce. Creating art through a Teaching for Artistic Behavior and Choice Based Learning approach allows my students to receive and grow these skills in a safe and engaging learning environment while meeting their personal needs.
